Larry Page and Sergey Brin were graduate students at Stanford working on a search system built to make sense of a rapidly expanding web. The project needed a name that felt as large as the problem.
THE ORIGINAL IDEA
“Googol” was the scale.
A Stanford account of the naming story traces the idea through googolplex, then the shorter googol, the mathematical term for a 1 followed by 100 zeros. It captured the ambition to index an immense amount of data.

THE TYPO
Google.com appeared by accident.
While checking domain availability, the word was entered as google.com. The misspelled version was available, the founders liked it, and the domain was registered. The typo stuck.
